Richard Steven Valenzuela or popularly Ritchie Valens was the first Hispanic rock star who could create a record like that.

Born in May 1941, in Pacoima, LA, Ritchie started his career at the age of sixteen with a band named 'The Silhouettes' as a guitarist. He was a left handed, but mastered the art of a right handed guitarist. He was known as one of the pioneers of 'Rock and Roll', 'Chicano rock movement' and 'Latin rock'.

Ritchie received worldwide fame with his version of a Mexican folk song called 'La Bamba' released in 1958. The song, infused the traditional Mexican tune with a rock drive, ranked number 98 in VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Rock and Roll and number 345 on Rolling Stone magazine′s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. This is the only non-English song to be listed.

In 1958, Ritchie was introduced to Bob Keane, the owner and President of Del-Fi Records, who recorded few of the famous numbers of Ritchie like 'Donna', 'Framed' and 'Come On, Let's Go' in the Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. Ritchie has three albums all together - Ritchie Valens (1959), Ritchie (1959) and In Concert at Pacoima Jr. High (1960).

Ritchie was still in his teens at the time of his demise caused by a plane crash. He was on a plane on February 2, 1959, after his performance in Clear Lake, Iowa, which crashed shortly after takeoff in a snow storm.

For someone who could have adorned the throne of fame and success in the realm of music, Ritchie's death was tragic and untimely. His contribution to music though limited by his short lifetime, is remarkable and defining. Today we remember his death as 'The Day the Music Died'.

- by Jim Ankan Deka (From EF News International)

Metallica in India

On Oct 28, 2011, Indians will probably witness one of the biggest events India has ever hosted – the ‘Metallica Tour of India’. He was a known for his powerful drumming and as a member of the band Led Zeppelin. He first learned to play drums at the age of five but never took any proper drum lessons. Bonham used the longest and heaviest sticks available, which he referred to as “trees”. His hard hitting style was displayed to great effect on many Led Zeppelin songs, including "Immigrant Song" (Led Zeppelin III), "When the Levee Breaks" (Led Zeppelin IV), "Kashmir" (Physical Graffiti), "The Ocean" (Houses of the Holy) etc.

In 1964, Bonham joined his first band, Terry Webb and the Spiders. He also played in other bands such as The Nicky James Movement, The Blue Star Trio, and The Senators. The Senators, released a moderately successful single “She's a Mod”. Two years later, he joined A Way of Life, but the band soon became inactive. Later he joined a blues group called Crawling King Snakes whose lead singer was a young Robert Plant. In 1967, Plant decided to form Band of Joy where Bonham was the first choice as a drummer. At the same time Bonham was getting famous as a Rock Drummer and was formally invited by the famous American singer Tim Rose to drum for his band. All these while, Bonham was working for his father Jack Bonham as an apprentice carpenter. But Tim Rose’s offer gave him a regular income. Ultimately in July 1968, Jimmy Page (vocalist of Led Zeppelin) and manager Peter Grant selected Bonham to be the perfect fit as a drummer for the band Led Zeppelin. Although Bonham was receiving lucrative offers from established artists like Joe Cocker and Chris Farlowe, he decided to accept Grant’s offer.

Bonham is also credited with the first in-concert use of ‘electronic timpani drum synthesizers’. His famous drum solo ‘Moby Dick’ would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of bare hands to achieve different sound effects. In Led Zeppelin concert tours after 1969, Bonham would expand his basic kit to include congas, orchestral timpani, and a symphonic gong. While with Led Zeppelin, Bonham also found time to play on sessions for other artists. In 1969 Bonham appeared on The Family Dogg's A Way of Life, with Page and Jones. In 1970, he sessioned for Screaming Lord Sutch on his album Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. He played drums on Lulu's 1971 song "Everybody Clap," originally written by Maurice Gibb and Billy Lawrie. Later in his career, Bonham drummed for his friend, Roy Wood, on his 1979 album, On the Road Again, and for Paul McCartney's Wings on their Back to the Egg Rockestra project.

On September 26, 1980, John Bonham was found dead in Page's house, The Old Mill House in Clewer, Windsor. Weeks later at the coroner's inquest, it emerged that in the 24 hours before he died, John Bonham had drunk forty measures of vodka which resulted in pulmonary edema - water logging of the lungs caused by inhalation of vomit. It was an accidental death. The alcoholism that had plagued the drummer since his earliest days with the band ultimately led to his death. Despite media rumors, the remaining members decided to disband Led Zeppelin after Bonham's death.

-Jim Ankan

Anna Hazare and 'Jan Lokpal Bill'

‎10 things to know about Anna Hazare 'n Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !

1. Who is Anna Hazare?

An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?

This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bil, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. Suddenly it was August and a thought struck me. I have never created any patriotic song or music. As August 15 is celebrated as the 'Independence Day of India', I went on creating my first song inspired by my love for my country on Aug 14 for the occasion of Independence Day celebration. I call it the 'Independence Awakening' as it is an awakening call for me after a long break since I brought into existence my last song.

It is a simple tune that I composed and merged with the 'National Anthem' of India and recorded at Eastern Fare Music Studio in Koramangala, Bangalore. Instruments used - Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Djembe, Ride and Ambiance Sounds.

Thanks to India, 'Independence Awakening' got me back into doing something that I like doing most - 'making music'. The track is dedicated to our mother, India.

Things that I Observe... Me and my niece were on the move from one place to another on my bike. We stopped at a point in 'Koramangala 5th Block' for some ice-cream. I parked my bike and went to the ice-cream parlour. When we returned, my bike was missing.

As there was no cop or anyone from the govt. or police department around, I had to take help from a nearby shop-keeper and he said that probably the bike was towed in some tempo-truck by a nearby police station. When we went to the 'Koramangala Police Station', they asked me to go to the 'Adugodi Traffic Police Station'. I reached the police station and found that lots of bikes were parked and chained in an open ground. There were also many young people waiting for their bikes.

There was a truck and inside was a Traffic Police. I went and asked him about my bike and he asked me to check among the parked (chained) bikes. When I didn't find it, I went back to him and he called some local people (not policemen for sure) to look into the matter. They told me that my bike will arrive in another truck in about 15 mins.

We waited for nearly one and half hours before the next truck reached the ground. There were no office or any police man to help the people. And people were waiting for their bikes to arrive under the shades of nearby shops as it was raining heavily. I was told by many that their bikes had been taken illegally. There was no 'No Parking' sign. And it was true. As my bike was also parked along with other cars and there was no sign-board that mentioned anything about 'No Parking' or 'No Parking for Two-Wheelers'.

When the Tow-Truck arrived, people went looking for their bikes. For some time there was a traffic policeman. But later, he left the truck and went somewhere. The truck guys (not policemen) were asking for fines from each person. When someone asked for the receipt, he was directed to the building of the 'Adugodi Traffic Police Station'. Many paid whatever they could to these guys on the truck and moved on in their bikes without government receipts.

People who went to the building, were asked to pay 300 (INR) and were issued receipts by Government of Karnataka. Rs100 for 'Wrong Parking', Rs100 as 'Govt. Towing Charge' and Rs100 for 'Private Component of Towing Charge'.

Now, my questions to the Government of Karnataka and the Traffic Police Department are - why was there no sign board or any guard in the 'Wrong Parking' zone and how will people find out about which police station to visit if their bikes or cars are towed? And lastly, can anyone from the Tow Truck (so-called), not necessarily cop, ask for money (bribe?) from people before releasing their vehicles? The questions continued ringing in my head until we reached home pretty late.

(facebook.com/jimankandeka)

A Mirthful Experience

The cacophony of notes that I wake up to every morning, always leave me in a enigmatic euphoria!! Have never been able to understand why so????. Well however, the notes are a lot different in this biiig cosmopolitan city of Bangalore as against my sweet home Assam. Back home my morning platter of euphonic delight was filled with cock-a-doodle-doo of my neighbour's rooster!! Well, that was just the appetiser; to be followed by a gourmet breakfast of chirping of birds, barking of dogs, the beating drums and prayers in unison from the ‘Naamghar’ at my neighborhood . I believe those harmonic sounds were a greater source of inspiration in directing my career towards music more than any legend- living or dead.

Two years and half in Bangalore in the corporate sector and I didn't take long to realise that routined life is not my cup of tea, not at all!! So, that's when I decided to take a U-Turn and head back directly towards the music junction. Few friends with common interests and I ended up landing in the Music Teaching Organisation called Fuzions Music. Now my life revolves around MUSIC , a full circle, after establishing my own Music Institution – Eastern Fare Music Foundation, altough a regular office goer might consider me a misfit, but seriously guys you don't know what you are missing :).

And today, altough I have fine tuned myself to wake up every morning to the sounds of the Mixer Grinder and Pressure Cooker in my neighbourhood, I still survive... CUZ MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN!! And so life goes on in harmony......

-Jim Ankan Deka

Ms.Irom Sharmila Chanu - another name for the 'Iron Lady'

Ms. Irom Sharmila Chanu (Born on 14th March 1972) - a social activist and poet from Manipur, who has been on 'fast-unto-death' for the past nine years demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 from Manipur, has been awarded ‘Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize’ on September 11, 2010. The award carrying Rs 51 lakhs, a gold medal and a citation was given to Ms Sharmila by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management. Irom Sharmila is the world's longest-running hunger striker.

Ms Sharmila has been struggling for almost 10 (ten) years for restoration of human rights in Manipur. She began 'fast-unto-death' after the Assam Rifles (Indian security personnel) killed 10 people at Malom village in Imphal valley in an encounter on November 2, 2000. She is too angry to eat, too upset, too disgusted by the violence that surrounds her, too disturbed by her helplessness to do anything about it. So, three times a day for the past decade, two nurses have been pouring a liquefied mixture of vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins and laxatives into a plastic feeding-tube, which enters her nose, attached by a grubby piece of white tape.

The 38-year-old has not seen her elderly mother, Shakhi Devi, since 2000, believing that doing so might weaken her resolve. Sharmila is the youngest of five brothers and four sisters. Her father was Irom Nanda. She had always been different to other young women. She scorned the use of make-up and channelled much of her energy into journalism and poetry. For litterateurs of Manipur, she is a budding poetess who has written hundreds of poems. She has completed two poetry books in Manipuri language 'Imadi Khongdai Setlaroi' and 'Khunai Kanba Numit' consisting of around 100 poems.

In September of 2005, Indian filmmaker Kavita Joshi interviewed Irom Sharmila and filmed her for a documentary 'Tales from the Margins' which received an award at a movie festival in Kerala. Deepti Priya Mehrotra has documented her struggle in her book 'Burning Bright: Irom Sharmila and the Struggle for Peace in Manipur'. Sharmila has been added to the global list of “1000 Women for Peace Nobel Prize”.

Since her commencement of 'fast-unto-death' on 3rd September, 2000, the authorities – unsure how to respond to Sharmila's actions – arrested her and charged her with attempted suicide, an offence for which she can only be jailed for a year. She refused bail, and she refused to break her fast. Time and again, the courts have released her. But with each release, she simply continues her fast, is re-repeatedly detained and forcibly nose-fed.

After being released from prison in October 2006, she traveled in hiding to New Delhi with her brother and two other activists. She camped on the roadside in a hot and dengue fever-struck city and continued to fast hoping to bring attention to her cause. She received no media coverage. In March 2007 she returned to Manipur. A few hours into her allegedly "free" return, she was re-arrested.

All this time, she has not eaten or drunk a thing, nor washed her hair, which is now matted and twisted. Her fast has caused her to stop menstruating, while some reports say her internal organs have been damaged. She uses dry cotton to wipe her teeth, insistent that water will not pass her lips. Held in a shabby, peeling room that measures 20ft by 12ft, she spends her days reading books, newspapers and letters from well-wishers. She sometimes does yoga. She has made cardboard models from a kit of famous structures of the world, among them the Empire State Building and London Bridge.

On May 18, 2007, Ms Sharmila was honored with the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights in Seoul, Korea. The award carries $125,000 in prize money, which Sharmila donated to the victims of human rights violations in Manipur.

Sharmila believes that the women of Manipur have had no option but to be strong and determined. She says " My struggle is in the name of justice, peace and love. I am a very simple symbol of those things. My struggle is a very simple matter, it depends on spirit, sufferance. My stand is for the sake of truth, and I believe truth succeeds eventually."

(One can stay in touch by writing directly to Sharmila and send her messages of solidarity at -
Irom Sharmila Chanu
Security Ward
Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital
Porompat
Imphal – 795001
Manipur)

Drums... There are two main types of percussion instruments - Instruments tuned to a definite pitch and Instruments without definite pitch. Most drums are considered "untuned instruments", however many modern musicians are beginning to tune drums to songs.

Drums are probably world's oldest musical instruments. Ever since their invantion, drums have been used in rituals. There are thousands of different kinds of drums to provide a rhythmic foundation for music and dance, to send signals, work magic or stir up emotions in battle. Drums are usually played by the hands, or by one or two sticks. In many traditional cultures drums have a symbolic function and are often used in religious ceremonies. Drums are often used in music therapy, especially hand drums, because of their tactile nature and easy use by a wide variety of people.

A Drum can be any hollow body over which a membrane, or head, is stretched. When the head is hit, the ensuing vibrations are amplified by the body. Within the realm of popular music and jazz, "drums" usually refers to a drum kit or a set of drums, and "drummer" to the actual band member or person who plays them.

Other than drums, there are various Percussion Instruments like Cymbals, Hi-Hats, Gongs, Castanets etc., used as accompaniment.

Drums are known in every part of the world. In India there are many types of folk drum, including the small Kettledrum that is played strung around the neck. The Timpani (a type of drum) are the most important members of the Western Orchestral percussion section. The Side Drum gets its name from its playing position in Military Bands, where it is slung from the shoulder and worn on an angle at the player's side.

Different types of Percussion Instruments - Maracas, Rainstick, Hand Shakers, Tambourine, Guiro, Rattle, Timpani, Bass Drum, Tom-Toms, Congas, Bongos, Timbales, Steel Drums, Drum Kit, Castanets, Triangle, Xylophone, Bells, Bell chimes, Tubular Bells, Tabla, Kettledrum etc.

Jim Ankan
http://rockinglyrics.blogspot.com/

<link rel='related' href='http://easternfare.googlepages.com' title='Drums... It will carry on for ever. Are we going to rejoice?? Or are we going to retaliate?? What was the person thinking, when he put the ‘Bomb’ in the market with the only intention of ‘Mass Killing’, or the person who went and beat up a North Indian to death because of the provocation of some unknown personality who is looking for fame? What was he thinking after the blast? Was he saying to his fellow friends, “Wow!! Have you guys seen it?? It’s the biggest blast of this year, man. 77 people have died. Wish I could have done it little bigger and reached the 100 mark. No problem, there is always a next time. Hey; get me some Tea and Samosas!!!” or “Hey, I have killed a non Maharashtrian (or a non Indian) today. Will kill two tomorrow!! Let’s drink, eat and sleep!!”

Come on people; let us blame the government. And let us shout saying “We are Indians. We need security. We can’t give that to our families, relatives and fellow Indians. It’s your duty Mr.Government, to help us out”. Why do we need help to survive? Have we seen a dog asking for help ever? We say we are superior to dogs. I don’t believe it. Dogs can run faster, see further, hear better, have a better instinct and are the best Friends. We lack all of these. And we proclaim that we ‘human beings’ are the best of all.

Are these killers or ‘fundamental organizations’ thinking that their children would not get through any school if there are so many people around alive? Or, are they thinking that there will be a scarcity of food? If these are the intentions, than I agree with them and ready to die for their cause. That was the school of thought Idi Amin propagated, wasn’t it?

This certainly looks like an attempt to reduce the ever increasing size of Indian population, kudos to the fundamentalist groups for their perseverant efforts (as the efforts of these so-called revolutionaries help in doing nothing else). Death of millions by poverty, calamities and violence has become a routine… makes me just take a moment and wonder… aren’t we on the list too?

But somewhere down the horizon a thin line of hope seems to be visible. So what are the chances? Should we give into this fear and grief? Or should we stop blaming or depending on others for our own security and stand up for ourselves?

Jim Ankan

Check my site click here

Me n My words again

Why am I telling this? Whom? Many a times we do things without rational motives. Is that true? There has to be a reason for everything. Rotation of the Earth is a reason. Mother's care for the child has a reason. Does this mean that I am a reason too? Was I born for a reason? If that's so, than everyone’s birth has a reason. But why is it that many people came and died without leaving any topic for others to talk about? What was the reason for that person's birth? I don't know.

What's death anyway? What's transformation of soul? Do souls go to heaven or hell? Are there places like that? Is there life after death? Someone told me long back, "if you want the answers to these questions, there is only one way to find it. You have to die!" That's true basically. Are these the questions, which were the reasons for many wars? Probably. Many leave their homes, wives, children, parents, and loved ones to find the answers to these questions. Could anyone ever found any resolution? Does it sound logical? It may to many.

Again, people do lots of things for power. I want power. I want to be number one. What is power? This is something everybody yearned for but didn't even get close to it. What a pity! Yes, many got strengthened. But power; define it please! Is it a possession of controlling influence? Dictionaries say so. Okay, even if I agree to it, what's the use? Can anybody control his future? If he could, I know one thing for sure, the first thing he would have done is to block his death. Have I seen anyone doing it? Huh! What's the use of it than? One has to leave everything once the time comes. What's the use of wars and battles?.... 'Oh, you'll not understand. You are not matured enough.' THAN MAKE ME UNDERSTAND YOU........!!!

Magic! A real one. Sure it is. I don't know what's coming next, but, I am happy with myself. Hope is there know? Why; does hope bring benevolence every time? Than? Still I.......like a pig. Am I lacking of benignity? What about others? When was the last time somebody being kind to a stray, paralytic dog? Virtuoso....human being! Virtuoso....me! Ha ha! How to consummate? I don't have the answers, thank you. I am a novice. A tyro; for sure. Otherwise I would've had the answers. How can I be enlightened? Dr. Mikao Usui was. So did many. I guess I am lacking of three important things. Faith, confidence and hope. Well..... Really HOPELESS!!

Again, what's the reason behind my birth? I feel like a duped. Am I one? I feel as if I am harassed with persistent criticism. Why is that? No answers! Great!.... Many people came into this world, as I had mentioned before, and shared whatever they had known with the world. They gained more knowledge with that. What am I doing? I don't want to live a life of stray cats or dogs. Actually their lives are quite better. They even have the freedom to die. Why don't I have the freedom of choice?..... What's there to choose anyway? It's all same all the time. Nonetheless, I need freedom to choose whatever is there. But I don't understand one thing; if we are left with the same old things, how can we have a 'new day'? For a new day, we need new things, new affairs, matters and lots more. Who is playing with us? Am I a software program of a video game? Who is the BIOS here? Who is the programmer? Millions of people go in search of themselves to mountains and places far from the reach of normal human. Why? To find the answers to these questions, right? Do they get the answers? I don't think so. Or am I wet behind the ears? Do they really get the answers? Are they satisfied with themselves? What is satisfaction? Is it really the act of fulfilling a desire or the contentment one feels when one has done something right? What is right? What is desire? The same questions!! C'mon now, I genuinely need a break.

There has to be a turning point. How to reach that? I need an unplayful commencement. Waiting for that............ Ne plus ultra!!!

Me and the Words!!!

Hunky-dory, what is SIN? Did ever God appear in front of anyone and give him a lesson on SIN? I - as a spiritual leader - would tell - "it's conscience". Oops! Sorry! I didn't know that. Huh! I know what is it. Motivation deriving logically from ethical or moral principles that govern a person's thoughts and actions = conscientiousness. What is logical? What is ethical? What is moral? I know dictionary meanings. But I need veridical meaning. And here I am stuck again. Penalization, is it?

I remember my childhood. Another name for excruciation. Seemed painless to many. I had to hide all the time. Searched the corners, or darkness. 'No pain, no gain', pedagogy all the time. Suffering still. Don't know what's coming next. Is transfiguration possible? How to do it? Will catechetical instruction help? How to start? Why can I not be like others? Content, happy? What's stopping me anyway? Or, rather, who is stopping me? Will guttling marijuana cigarette help? They say they fly or go to heaven. How can that be possible? They have never flown nor have they seen heaven before. How can they compare? How or to what will I compare after taking it? I don't know. How do alcohol help? Don't know again. Is it a sign of being intellectually appealing or does it help to practice sophistry? How long can one run? One day he has to bring himself back home. So hard to understand sometime... every time!

How to be perfect, without defect or blemish, precisely accurate or exact, immaculate? Elegant and stylish! Who is going to say what's elegant or stylish or debonair? Who is the judge here? I am not. I have never been. Who is that then?

"A new day has come"
Celine Dion in her best. It's a feeling that is oriented towards some real or supposed grievance. But I really don't have any. Than why is this choler? Or is it ‘a yellow bile’? A humor that was once believed to be secreted by the liver and to cause irritability and anger? Confusion; too much of it. I guess I am completely out of resources. In another word - evacuated. Where to find the vitamins? Am I going against authority? But who is my superior? 'The One' whom I can't see or hear? Yeah right!
